Today we will learn about interjections, which is one of 8 parts of speech.

What is an interjection?

An interjection is a word that shows the spontaneous feeling or emotion of a person and sudden feelings like- Surprise, fear, suspense, anger, joy etc. Interjections are frequently followed by an exclamation mark(!).

For Example:-

  • Wow!
  • Yay!
  • Oh no!
  • Whoops!
  • Huh!
  • Eww!
  • Alas!
  • Aww!
Now there might be questioning your mind, why should we use interjection?

Even if we don’t use interjections the meaning of the sentence won’t change. But we use interjection because it inserts excitement or another strong emotion, such as Joy excitement, surprise, sadness into a sentence thereby making a sentence more emotionally connected.

Let’s understand it with the help of examples:-

After seeing the Taj Mahal for the first time, what will be your reaction?

  • Wow, What an amazing place!

Here the interjection wow expresses a feeling of surprise.

Let’s look into another Examples:-

After seeing a cute puppy in your street, what would be your reaction?

  • Aww, that puppy is so cute!

Here, the interjection Aww expresses an exclamation of appreciation for cuteness.

If you hear the news that your friend’s brother has died, what would be your reaction?

  • Alas, His brother died due to COVID!

The interjection, Alas, expresses a feeling of sadness.

If you forgot to bring your purse, and you realize it after having dinner in a hotel, what would be your reaction?

  • Oh no, I forgot to bring the purse!

The interjection Oh no / Oh expresses a feeling of Sorrow.

If you see a very dirty dust bin, what would be your reaction?

  • Eww, this is a very dirty dustbin!

The interjection Eww expresses a feeling of disliking.

After winning a race in your school’s annual sports, what would be your reaction?

  • Hurray, I win the race!

Here the interjection Hurray, expresses a feeling of happiness.

Some parts of speech which are acts like interjection:-

  • Cheer up!
  • Dear me!
  • Farewell!
  • O Death!
  • Welcome!
  • Thank God!
  • My God!
