What is an adjective phrase?
Definition1- A phrase that modifies a noun or pronoun, and a phrase that gives information about a noun or pronoun is called a Adjective phrase.
Definition2- When an Adjective phrase does not have an Adjective in it, we generally call it an Adjective phrase.
Examples:-
- The girl in the field are my friend.
In this example, our adjective phrase is in the field. - The guy in the blue shirt is my brother.
In this example, our adjective phrase is in the blue shirt. - The boy was surprisingly good.
In this example, our adjective phrase is surprisingly good. - I saw a glass on the table.
In this example, our adjective phrase is on the table.
How to make sentence adjective to adjective phrase:-

Position of Adjective phrase:-
- In the beginning of the sentence/before the noun it modifies.
For Examples:-
- Your overly excited friend is dancing.
In this example Your Overly Excited is the adjective phrase that’s coming in the beginning of the sentence modifying the noun friend giving information about the noun friend. - Betrayed by his girlfriend, Monsi committed suicide.
In this example betrayed by his girlfriend is the adjective phrase that’s giving information about the noun Monsi.
- Middle of the sentence or just after the noun it modifies.
For Examples:-
- A guy smarter than me will solve this math.
In this example an adjective phrase is smarter than me. Smarter than me is the adjective phrase that’s giving information about the noun guys. - The boy wearing a purple t shirt is my friend.
In this example wearing a purple T shirt is the adjective phrase that’s coming in the middle of the sentence that’s coming just after the noun. modifies boy.
- The end of the sentence.
For Examples:-
- Her behavior was highly rude.
In this example highly rude is the adjective phrase that’s coming at the end of the sentence giving information about the noun behaviour. - This math was very difficult to solve.
In this example very difficult to solve is the adjective phrase that’s coming at the end of the sentence giving information, modifying the noun math.
So we just have seen that an adjective phrase can come in the beginning of the sentence, in the middle of the sentence, and also at the end of the sentence.
Sometimes an adjective phrase does not have an adjective in it, It starts with:-
- a preposition.
- a participle.
- an infinitive.
Example of adjective phases starting with a preposition:-
- I don’t like to ride with no music.
In this example with no music is the prepositional phrase starting with the preposition with that’s working as an adjective that’s modifying the noun ride. It’s basically a prepositional phrase starting with a preposition with but it’s modifying the non ride, so it’s an adjective phrase. - I have a video of your birthday party.
In this example of your birthday party is the adjective phrase here that’s giving information about the noun picture that’s modifying the noun picture. So off your childhood is basically a prepositional phrase starting with the preposition of but since it’s a phrase and working as an adjective, I can call it an adjective phrase.
Example of adjective phases starting with a participle:-
- The boy sleeping on the bed is my brother.
In this example sleeping on the bed is a participle phrase starting with the present participle. Sleeping, modifying the noun boy. - The ground built next to my house is huge.
In this example built next to my house is adjective phrase. So this basically is a participle phrase starting with the past participle built. but it’s working as an adjective. So since it’s a phrase and working as an adjective, we can call it an adjective phrase.
Example of adjective phases starting with an infinitive:-
- I don’t know a person to trust blindly.
In this example to trust blindly is infinitive phrase starting with the infinitive to trust working as an objective, modifying the noun person which person to trust blindly. - He is the guy to look out for in the next match.
In this example to look out for in the next match is an infinitive phrase starting with the infinitive to look and working as an Adjective and modifying the known guy which guy to look out for in the next match.
What is the difference between adjective and adjective phrase?
An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a word, such as big, small, and beautiful. An adjective phrase is a group of word that describe one another, such as big-headed, little-girl, and handsome.
