What are the most common types of questions in English? There are two common types of questions in English.

1. Wh questions-
  • What is your name?
  • What is your favourite place?
2. Yes, no questions-
  • Do you like dog?
  • Do you love me?

What are Wh questions/word?

We use Wh words to ask about different types of information.

Who- We use who to ask about a person.

For example-

  1. Who are you?
  2. Who is he?
  3. who is she?
  4. Who did you come with?

What- We use what to ask about a things.

For example-

  1. What are you doing?
  2. What is that?
  3. What is the time?
  4. What is your name?
  5. What does your friend do?
  6. What time do you go home?

Where- We use where to ask about a place.

For example-

  1. Where are you going?
  2. Where are my books?
  3. Where are you coming from?
  4. Where is my brother?
  5. Where can I find a swimming pool?
  6. Where is my dog?

When– We use when to ask about time.

For example-

  1. When does your class start?   
  2. When are you going home?
  3. When does the movie start?
  4. When is the doctor’s appointment?
  5. When is your cricket match?
  6. When are you free?

Which- We use which to ask about Choice.

For example-

  1. Which one is your pen?
  2. Which one do you want?
  3. Which subject do you like best?
  4. Which book do you want to read?
  5. Which flower would you like?
  6. Which one would you prefer?

Why- We use why to ask about a reason.

For example-

  1. Why are you so happy?
  2. Why is the baby crying?
  3. Why did you change your clothes?
  4. Why can’t you go tomorrow?
  5. Why are you late?
  6. Why didn’t you go to school?

How- We use how to ask about manner.

For example-

  1. How are you?
  2. How was your vacation?
  3. How did it go?
  4. How do you cook chicken?
  5. How small is the house?
  6. How tall are you?

Question patterns-

There are two common question patterns for the simple present tense in English.

  • First common pattern is Wh-word + do + subject + verb.

For example: Where do you live?

Note that we use does when the subject is he, she, it or a singular noun.

For example:

  1. Where does he go?
  2. Where does she go?
  3. Where does it go?
  4. Where do we live?
  5. Where do they live?

  • Second common question pattern is Wh-word + be+ subject.

For example: How are you?

Note that be changes forms with different subjects.

For example:
